Lubbock, TX – TRUNO Retail Technology Solutions proudly announces its successful partnership with Goodwill Industries of the Valleys to launch the first Goodwill-owned, full-service grocery store, the Market on Melrose. Market on Melrose represents a cornerstone of the transformative Melrose Plaza initiative aimed at revitalizing Northwest Roanoke. TRUNO was selected to provide a comprehensive front-end technology solution for the new store, showcasing its commitment to empowering community grocery stores with best of breed technology and exceptional service.
At the heart of the solution is the NCR ENCOR point-of-sale (POS) software which TRUNO paired with state-of-the-art hardware, ensuring an efficient and seamless checkout experience for Market on Melrose customers. TRUNO managed the entire process from proposal to full implementation, bringing its expertise to every stage of the project.
"Projects like this do not happen without partners who are in it to win it, who are dedicated to the work, and who understand the big picture of what this grocery store means to the community. From day one, TRUNO demonstrated an unwavering commitment to our vision, navigating challenges with professionalism and grace." Goodwill Chief Operating Officer, Mindy Boyd said of the partnership.
TRUNO’s commitment to partnership and excellence ensured the successful completion of this innovative grocery store, designed to bring fresh food access and community impact to the local area.
Market on Melrose: A Community Milestone
The store, which opened on November 13, 2024, addresses decades of food insecurity in Northwest Roanoke, which has been categorized as a food desert. Market on Melrose is part of a $30 million investment in the area, supported by the City of Roanoke and various local partners. Offering healthy, affordable food, it is a vital step in Melrose Plaza’s broader mission to restore economic stability, enhance educational opportunities, and improve community health through integrated services.
"Being part of Goodwill’s visionary project with Market on Melrose is deeply meaningful to me, both professionally and personally," said Don Edwards, Vice President at TRUNO. "As someone who grew up in Roanoke and still has family here, this initiative represents a unique opportunity to give back to a community close to my heart. At TRUNO, we believe in leveraging technology to create lasting impact, and this project perfectly embodies our mission to drive both operational excellence and meaningful community change."
Market on Melrose is more than a grocery store – it represents Goodwill’s broader mission to support and uplift communities by providing sustainable solutions and meaningful opportunities. TRUNO is proud to have played a pivotal role in bringing this vision to life.
About Melrose Plaza
Once a thriving center of culture and commerce, Northwest Roanoke suffered from urban renewal in the 1950s, losing critical infrastructure. Melrose Plaza, under Goodwill’s leadership, honors this heritage while addressing the community's most pressing needs. In addition to the grocery store, Melrose Plaza will feature a wellness center, an adult high school, and financial empowerment services, making it a beacon of positive change for residents and a model for revitalizing underserved communities nationwide.
